I love discovering new clean products readily available in grocery stores. Otamot jarred tomato sauce is a new favorite. Otamot Foods is a brand of clean and nutrient-packed organic tomato sauces ? If you’re interested in adding more veggies to your meals this organic, gluten-free, Whole 30 approved sauce is an easy way to do it.
Otamot is a bit thicker than typical jarred tomato sauces because it is packed with more concentrated goodness (real organic veggies) and has less added water. The best thing about Otamot is that its NOT full of artificial flavors, canola oil, sugar or any additives – like most conventional jarred sauces are. There’s a reason that jar of Preggo is $2, and a high-quality jar is $10-$12. The conventional brands use cheap filler ingredients to amp up the flavor, while brands like Otamot rely on quality, organic, real-food ingredients.
Finding a Clean Jarred Sauce:
1️⃣Avoid Added Sugar:
Most wouldn’t think that tomato sauce is a high sugar food. But some sauces can contain up to 35 grams of sugar per jar (AHA recommends 25 grams a sugar a day for 18 years and younger). If you’re looking to avoid hidden sugar, check your sauce! A tomato sauce will have natural sugar from tomatoes, carrots and other vegetables – but you can avoid the ADDED sugar with a smart product choice.
2️⃣ Avoid Canola oil:
Comes from the rapeseed plant, where 90% of canola crops are genetically modified to survive when sprayed with herbicides (a substance that is toxic to plants, used to destroy unwanted vegetation), including glyphosate (the World Health Organization called Monsanto’s herbicide Glyphosate a probable carcinogen in 2015 & has since been reveled to play a role in many other health concerns).
The process to make canola oil is lengthy and includes solvents, bleaching and deodorizing. Beyond being highly processed, canola oil also has a high omega 6 content. A diet high in omega 6’s (more omega 6’s than omega 3’s) can contribute to inflammation which may lead to a whole list of health issues from depression, Alzheimer’s, obesity, and heart disease. Better for you tomato sauces use olive oil which is anti inflammatory and full of antioxidants (3) .
