Homemade Pizza, Date Night at Home

homemade pizza date night

I love being treated to a romantic date night out on the town, but there is something really special about a relaxed date night in at home. Just because it’s “at home” doesn’t mean you can’t still have an amazing date night.

All you need for a fun date night at home is a $5.95 DeLallo Italian Pizza Dough Kit (and of course a bottle of moscato). Its a simple dough kit available at local Pittsburgh grocery stores. All you need to do is combine the packages of flour and yeast and add water. Forty-five minuets later the dough has risen and is ready for you to create the perfect elasticity for pizza dough from the thin, crisp Neapolitan-style crust to the thicker, chewier crust.

Then its the fun part – creating your own custom pizza. To me the best part of homemade pizza is that you can add whatever you want! Who doesn’t love loading up toppings and playing around with flavor combinations?! If you’re like me your pantry and fridge are most likely already filled with pizza fixings. All you need to gather is sauce, vegetables, meats, and cheese.

My pizza date and I made 3 pizza combinations.

1- Vodka sauce, herbs, parmesan cheese, sauteed mushrooms and onions.

2- Parmesan cheese, sauteed mushrooms and onions, basil and balsamic glaze.

3- Pesto, grilled chicken, parmesan cheese, sauteed mushrooms and onions.

And yes we used homegrown basil that had the sweetest heart-shaped bug bite shape. 100% natural find adding to the sappiness of this romantic date night 🙂

Making pizza for a date night in is all about being relaxed at home and spending time with the one you love. I for one am all about siting back, relaxing, pouring another glass of wine, and enjoying a date night at home!

Filet with bacon mushroom brandy cream sauce

Filet with bacon mushroom brandy cream sauce

Sunday night dinners at my parents’ house growing up was usually steak with my Dad’s special, decadent bacon mushroom brandy cream sauce. Seriously something to look forward to and or make a trip home for. It has taken me awhile, but I think I’ve finally mastered by Dad’s recipe.

Filet with Bacon Mushroom Brandy Cream Sauce

  • Filet or steak of choice
  • 3 large portobello mushrooms, or another meaty variety, chopped into inch & plus sized pieces
  • 8 slices of thick cut bacon (with fat), sliced into centimeter wide slices
  • 1/2 of a large yellow or white onion, chopped finely
  • 3/4 cups heavy whipping cream, shake before pouring
  • 3-4 tablespoons of Brandy

Sauce Recipe Execution

  1. Prepare and season filet or steak as desired and set aside to rest.
  2. Add the bacon slices to a low heat medium/large non stick pan cook slowly (no spray, oil, or butter needed)
  3. As the bacon is nearly cooked through, add the onion. This will sweat and cook with the bacon fat. Keep on low heat cooking until onions are translucent and cooked down.
  4. Make sure mushrooms are patted dry post-wash and add to the pan. Cook slow and steady, moving contents around. Cook down for about 10 minutes. Mushrooms should be cooked down with stock/ juices present in the pan.
  5. Cook steak as desired while sauce cooks down.
  6. Add cream slowly and gradually mixing into pan contents a bit at a time.
  7. Cook slow and steady still at low temp, for 5-10 minutes, slowly moving contents as film gathers on cream. It should cook at a low simmer, bubbling is too rough for the cream to thicken.
  8. Pour brandy into ladle or large spoon. Light brandy with flame. Dump into sauce and cook off liquor to your desired taste. Like below.

Serve an ample amount of sauce on top of steak and enjoy the deliciousness. By the way if you’ve never bought brandy before the kind we use is E&J VSOP very affordable.
